First Generation

1. John1 Rushworth was born in New York 25/10/1721. John died 30/08/1780 in Cowes, Isle of Wight, at 58 years of age. His body was interred 1780 in Northwood Church, Isle of Wight.

He married Sarah Mayne. Sarah was born c1724. Sarah died 7/05/1780 at 55 years of age.

Married to Sarah who died at West Cowes 7 May 1780 aged 56.

Memorials in Northwood Church:

'In Memory of John Rushworth, Esq. 22 years a Post Captain of His Majesty's Fleet, who died the 30th day of August 1780 in the 59th year of his age, and lied interred near this place.'

'Sarah the wife of John Rushworth, Esq., Captain in the Royal Navy, died the 7th day of May 1780, and lies interred near this place.'

The Rushworths had settled in America during the dissensions between Charles I and the Parliament. When the trouble with The American Colonies began John Rushworth had to decide whether to give up his interests in America, or become a citizen of the new United States and an enemy of England. This undermined his health and hastened his death about the time of the declaration of Independence.

John Rushworth and Sarah Mayne had the following children:

child + 2 i. Edward2 Rushworth was born 17/10/1755.

child 3 ii. John Rushworth was born 29/01/1758. John died 7/09/1793 in Hythe, Southampton, Hampshire, at 35 years of age. His body was interred 12/09/1793 in Dibden Churchyard, nr Hythe, Hampshire. He was baptized in Kingston Church, Portsea, Hampshire, 1758. Religion: religion unknown.

child 4 iii. Elizabeth Rushworth was born 6/07/1762. Elizabeth died 22/07/1817 in Southampton, at 55 years of age. She married John Keele 1781. (See John Keele for the continuation of this line.)

She was baptized in All Saints Church, Southampton, Hampshire, 1762. Religion: religion unknown. Had 9 children.
