First Generation

1. Neil Benjamin1 Edmonstone was born 19 December 1765. Neil died June 1841 at 75 years of age.

He married twice. He married an unknown person. He married Charlotte Anne Friell in Calcutta, Bengal, India, 19 December 1803. Charlotte was born 18 April 1777. Charlotte was the daughter of Peter Friell and Anne Charlotte Boileau. Charlotte died 18 March 1838 at 60 years of age.

He was christened in St. Marylebone, London, England, 12 January 1766. Edmonstone, who had arrived in Calcutta as an East India Company writer in 1783, had begun a family with an unknown bibi in the 1790s. Three sons and a daughter born in the late 1790s and early 1800s were given the surname Elmore and sent to England to be fostered by the sister of a friend in the East India Company. Edmonstone married Charlotte Anne, daughter of Peter Friel, in 1803, with whom he had five sons and six daughters. (Notes found with Lot 26 : George Chinnery (1774-1852) on www.invaluable.com)

child 3 ii. John (Elmore) Edmonstone was born in India 28 August 1796. He was christened 11 February 1797. Sent to Scotland in 1802 with Alexander to be brought up by Margaret Baillie.

child 4 iii. Frederick William (Elmore) Edmonstone was born in India 11 August 1800. Frederick died 1816 at 15 years of age. He was christened 8 March 1801.

child 5 iv. Eliza (Elmore) Edmonstone was born in India c1805. She married John Barker Plumb 1825. John was born in Shadwell, Middlesex c1803. He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in 2 Gloucester Gardens, Paddington, London. (See John Barker Plumb for the continuation of this line.)

Neil Benjamin Edmonstone and Charlotte Anne Friell had the following children:

child 6 v. William Archibald Edmonstone was born in Calcutta, Bengal, India 1804. William died 19 July 1827 in India, at 23 years of age. He was christened 19 December 1804.

child 7 vi. Charlotte Anne Edmonstone was born 28 August 1805. Charlotte died 1878 at 72 years of age. She married twice. She married James Carnegie in Trinity Church, Marylebone, London, 6 June 1829. James was born in Balmerino, Fife, Scotland 26 October 1806. James died 1831 at 24 years of age. His body was interred 27 March 1831 in St. Helena. He was christened in Balmerino, Fife, Scotland, 21 November 1806. She married Reverend John Hodgson in St, James, Paddington, London, 19 August 1845. Vicar of St. Peters, Isle of Thanet.

She was christened 19 December 1805. She was listed as a resident in the census report in 9 Hornsey Lane, Islington, London, 1851. She was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Oak Side, Soutbank, Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey. Charles H Edmonstone b c 1853 in India and Ellen C Edmonstone b c 1857 in India are listed as nephew and niece (1871).

child 8 vii. Henrietta Dashwood Edmonstone was born in Calcutta, Bengal, India 7 December 1806. Henrietta died 1888 in Paddington, London, at 81 years of age. She was christened 19 December 1806. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Bradstone Lodge, Richmond Park, Clifton, Somerset, 1851. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Walton Villa, Clifton, Somerset, 1861.

child 9 viii. Susanna Edmonstone was born in Calcutta, Bengal, India 21 March 1808. Susanna died 1886 in Marylebone, London, at 78 years of age. She married Reverend Henry Thomas Lumsden in Trinity Church, Marylebone, London, 30 April 1832. Henry was born in India 1809. Henry was the son of John Lumsden and Magdalene Friell. Henry died 1867 in St. Giles, London, at 58 years of age. He was christened in Calcutta, Bengal, India, 25 February 1809. He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Austin Street, Ipswich, Suffolk. He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Cushnie Cottage, Leochel Cushnie, Aberdeenshire.

She was christened 18 April 1808. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Austin Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, 1851. Susanna was visiting 1861 in Walton Villa, Clifton, Somerset. Susanna was visiting 1881 in Belgrave Crescent, Tormoham, Devon.

child 13 xii. Louisa Macleod Edmonstone was born in Calcutta, Bengal, India 26 November 1814. Louisa died 1871 in Hastings, Sussex, at 56 years of age. She married (Reverend Thomas Clements Browne in Leamington Priors, Warwick, 9 June 1842. (Reverend was born in India 28 October 1812. (Reverend died 1851 in Clifton, Bristol, at 38 years of age. She was christened 19 December 1814. She was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Bradstone Lodge, Richmond Park, Clifton, Somerset. She was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Walton Villa, Clifton, Somerset. Louisa was a lodger 1871 in 17 Grand Parade, Eastbourne, Sussex.

child 14 xiii. Ann Craigie Edmonstone was born in India c1817. Ann died 1899 in Marylebone, London, at 82 years of age. She was christened in Bengal, India, 19 December 1817. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Bradstone Lodge, Richmond Park, Clifton, Somerset, 1851. Ann was visiting 1871 in 1 Cliff Villa, Harwich, Essex. Ann was visiting 1881 in 22 Cleveland Gardens, Paddington, London.

child 15 xiv. James Harene Edmonstone was born 22 June 1819. James died 1834 at 15 years of age. He was christened in St. Mary's Parish Church, Marylebone Road, London, 31 July 1819.

child 16 xv. Alicia Augusta Edmonstone was born in London 30 October 1820. She was christened in St. Mary's Parish Church, Marylebone Road, London, 21 December 1820. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Bradstone Lodge, Richmond Park, Clifton, Somerset, 1851. She was listed as a resident in the census report in St. Annes, Tormoham, Devon, 1861.
