Mr. William Elphinstone Malcolm, of Burnfoot, died suddenly yesterday. As announced in The Times of yesterday, it was only on Saturday that he was presented with his portrait to celebrate the completion of his 90th year, and in recognition of his long public services in the Border district. Mr. Malcolm came of a distinguished Border family, his father being on of the Four Knights of Eskdale-for brothers name Malcolm, who all rose to eminence in the service of their country, and who were all knighted. He was born in December, 1817, in London, and he was the second son of Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm, G.C.B., G.C.M.G. His mother was a daughter of the Hon. William Fullerton Elphinstone. After being educated at Hampstead and Finchley he entered the Navy in 1831, and served in H.M. frigate Belvidere in the Mediterranean, but left the service in 1833 on account of weak health. Later he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, and took his B.A. degree in 1840. He spent two years in foreign travel, and after taking his M.A. degree in 1843 settled at Burnfoot, where he had ever since resided. He was a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Supply, and a Deputy-Lieutenant for the county of Dumfies. When the Volunteer movement took shape, in 1860, he became captain of the Langholm Company, his service extending over 26 years, during the last five of which he commanded the Dumfriesshire Battalion. In 1857 he married Mary, second daughter of Mr. James Douglas, of Cavers, Roxburghshire (she died in 1859), and by her had one daughter who succeeded to the Cavers property. He subsequently married Charlotte Elizabeth, eldest daughter of the Hon. Alex. Leslie Melville, and she died in 1892.
