bullet  General Notes:

Justice of the Peace in 1751. Represented New Hanover county in the
assembly from 31 March 1752 until 8 April 1775. Commanded troops at
the battle of Briar Creek on 3 March 1779. Ashe's poorly supplied
troops were surprised and defeated by an attack from the rear. Ashe
sought a hearing and the court concluded that he had not taken the
necessary precautions and was censured. In 1781 he was taken prisoner
by the British. In prison he contracted smallpox and was released and
died while making his way home to Hillsborough. He was buried in an
unmarked grave. 340
