General Notes:
Educated at Harvard Unitversity. Was assisant attorney for the crown in Wilmington. Was one of the first prominent men to become a zealous American patriot. Under the new North Carolina constitution was elected speaker of the senate and was one of three presiding judges of the state supreme court. Had several children with Elizabeth Merrick, Thomas being the only one to survive to maturity.
Samuel married Mary Porter, daughter of John Porter and Unknown, in 1746. (Mary Porter was born c 1732 344 and died in 1767 344.)
Samuel next married Elizabeth Jones Merrick in 1769.342 (Elizabeth Jones Merrick was born in 1745 342 and died in 1810 342.)
