John married Annie Rainy, daughter of Harry Rainy and Barbara Gordon, on 21 September 1841 in 10 Moore Place, Glasgow.³³² (Annie Rainy was born on 17 October 1820 in Glasgow, Scotland and died in December 1891.) The cause of her death was Influenza.
