General Notes:
Assumed the name of Melville on the death of his brother John in 1893. Educated at Edinburgh Academy and Edkinburgh University, he joined his father's frim where he became a solictor and later in 1842 a Writer to the Signet. He was appointed Clerk to the Commissioners of Income Tax for Midlothian; this position was held in the family until his grandson, John Inglis Balfour-Melville, resigned in 1962. He was also a Justice of the Peace for the County of Fife.
