Had four boys and four girls. The three eldest boys died at one time of diptheria in 1857. The only other son was drowned in 1883 when on a boating expedition on the Thames.

Buchanan married Frances E. Hazell, daughter of Robert Hazell and Unknown, in 1844 in Maidstone, Kent. (Frances E. Hazell was born in 1821 in Maidstone, Kent.)
