Lieutenant Reverend William Neve Monteith 26,292
General Notes: Educated at Cargilfield School, Fettes Prepartory School, Magdalen College, Oxford (B.A.) and Glasgow University (B.D.); was a presbyterian minister being for some time assistant to the Reverend Dr. Playfair of St. Andrews, and in 1907 became minister of Elie Parish Church. On the outbreak of war in August 1914, he volunteered, and on being granted leave of absence by the Presbytery of St. Andrews, joined the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry as a Trooper, but obtained a Lieutenancy in the Rifle Brigade 22 January 1915; went to France 29 May 1915 and was killed in action near Loos 25 September 1915 following while leading his men in an attack. He was mentioned in Despatches by Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig (London Gazette 15 June 1916) for gallant and distinguished service in the field. Noted events in his life were: 1. Resided: 25 September 1915, Elie, Fifeshire. 13 2. He had an estate probated on 5 May 1916 in London. 13 William married Muriel May Cox, daughter of Benjamin Connell Cox and Unknown, on 30 March 1915 in Largo Parish Church, Largo, Fife.292 |
