The Lord Lyon King of Arms in Scotland has appointed
Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Wolesley Haig, K.C.I.E., C.S.I., C.M.G, C.B.E.,
March Pursuivant of Arms to be Albany Herald, and Lieutenant-Colonel
John William Balfour Paul, D.S.O., of Cakemuir, Midlothian, to be
Falkland Pursuivant.
Colonel Balfour Paul is the eldest son of Sir James Balfour Paul who
recently retired from the office of Lyon King of Arms. The title of
Falkland Pursuivant, which has been resusictated in his person, is
taken from the Royal palace of that name, and has been in abeyance
since before 1500.

Lieutenant-Colonel John William Balfour Paul, D.S.O., Marchmont Herald
to the Lyon Court since 1939, died at Edinburgh yesterday at the age
of 84.
The son of Sir James Balfour Paul, a former Lyon King of Arms, he was
educated at Sedburgh and became a tea planter in Ceylon. He served in
the South African War with the Ceylon Mounted Rifles, and received a
wound as a result of which he lost an arm. He was again in service
with his regiment in the 1914-18 War and was awarded the D.S.O. In
1927 he was appointed Falkland Pursuivant of Arms to the Lyon Court,
the title, which had been in abeyance since before 1500, being
resuscitated in his person. He was a member of the Royal Comapany of
Archers, and had been vice-lieutenant of Midlothian since 1951. He
had also been county commissioner of Boy Scouts for Midlothian since
1930.
He married, in 1908, Muriel, daughter of the Rev. John Monteith, of
Glencairn. There were three sons of the marriage.

John married Muriel Cassels Monteith, daughter of Reverend John Monteith and Ellen Maria Neve, on 26 November 1908. (Muriel Cassels Monteith was born c 1882 in Moniaive, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland 66,354 and died on 13 April 1964 in Edinburgh 13.)
