General Notes: St Kitts-born British colonial administrator (1887-1980); Appointed to the treasury and customs department of St. Kitts in 1905. Colonial Secretary of the Bahamas, Deputy Chief Secretary of Nigeria, Governor, General of Belize, 1934-1940; Governor of Ghana, 29 Jun 1942 - 2 Aug 1947. Burns was appointed CMG in 1927, KCMG in 1936, and GCMG in 1946. He was made a knight of the order of St John of Jerusalem in 1942. Noted events in his life were: 1. Pupil: 1901, St. Edmunds Collge, Old Hall Green, Hertfordshire. 2. Knighthood: 1936. Alan married Kathleen Fitzpatrick Hardtman, daughter of Robert Altman Hardtman and Alice Gordon, in 1914. (Kathleen Fitzpatrick Hardtman was born in 1890 and died in 1970.) |
