bullet  General Notes:

Descendant of Maurice Berkeley, from Gloucestershire, who settled in
the West Indies in about 1630. Of Shadwell, St Kitts and Cedar Hill. Was made Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1876. His son was the Attorney General, presumably of Antigua.

The capital of St. Kitts is picturesque Basseterre, located near the
seaboard of the west coast. It became the British capital in 1727 and
has since had its share of natural disasters-floods, hurricanes,
earthquakes, and fires. A fire in 1867 destroyed a great deal of the
city, but Basseterre was rebuilt and expanded. The Circus, located
where Bank Street, Fort Street, and Bay Road intersect, is a result
of that reconstruction and a worthwhile stop. Built in traditional
English style after London's famous Piccadilly Circus, it's the heart
of the town, with business people, taxi drivers, and tourists
bustling about. The Berkeley Memorial, built in honour of Thomas
Berkeley, former president of the General Legislative Council, is the
centrepiece of the Circus. Turn right on Bank Street and head for
Independence Square. Built in 1790 for slave auctions and council
meetings, it offers charming, well-preserved examples of Colonial
architecture.

Berkeley Memorial
Erected by Lord Combermere and built by George Smith & Company Sun
Foundry Glascow on the 29th of March 1883. The clock and drinking
fountain originally built in honour of Thomas B.H. Berkeley who died
December 6th, 1881 has become a recognizable icon in the centre of
Basseterre. He was recognized by his peers as a planter, St. Kitts
legislator and president of the General Legislative Council of the
Leeward Islands Federation. His love for St. Kitts and his concern
for the welfare of its people motivated im to contribute to the countries improvement.
