Mr. E.C. Eliot, C.B.E., formerly Administrator of Dominica, died at
Beverley, St. Lawrence, Barbadoes, on New Year's Day.
Edward Carlyon Eliot was the second son of the late Rev. E. Eliot.
After being educated at Bradfield and at Uppingham he went cattle
ranching in Argentina from 1888 to 1892, and sugar planting in
Demerara from 1893 to 1895. In the last-mentioned year he entered the
Colonial Service, and among the posts he held were those of Provincial
Commissioner, West Africa, 1907-10; Commissioner and Warden of Tobago,
1911-13; Resident Commissioner, Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony,
1913-20; private secretary (temporary) to the Governor-General of
Australia, 1916-17; Acting Chief Secretary and Deputy Governor of
Uganda, 1921-22; and Acting Governor of Uganda, 1922. In 1923 he was
appointed Administrator of Dominica, which post he retained until his
retirement in 1931. He married first Clara Frances, eldest daughter
of the late Colonel A. J. Paterson, 19th Regiment. She died in 1926.
Secondly he married Marion, daughter of the Hon. F.B.B. Shand. Mr.
Eliot had a son.

Edward married Alice Marion Shand, daughter of Francis Byam Berkeley Shand and Elfreda Millicent Nicholls, in 1927. (Alice Marion Shand was born in 1906 in Dominica, West Indies and died in 1959 in Trinidad, West Indies.)
