James Elphinstone, 1st Lord Balmerino 22
General Notes: Secretary of State to King James in Scotland before his accession to the throne of England. In 1609, a jury sentenced him to be beheaded, quartered, and attainted as a traitor, but the sentence was not carried out. Died a prisoner in his own house at Balmarino. Noted events in his life were: 1. He was Created Baron in 1604 James married Sarah Menteith, daughter of Sir John Menteith and Unknown, on 21 March 1588. James next married Marjory Maxwell, daughter of Hugh Maxwell and Unknown, in 1597. |
