The death is announced of Mr. John Balfour, of Balbirnie, Fife, the head of a family which has been seated at its present home for 400 years, and with which Mr. Arthur Balfour, M.P., is connected. Mr. John Balfour was born in 1811. He was the eldest son of the late General Robert Balfour, of Balbirnie, by his marriage with Eglantine Katharine, daughter of Mr. John Fordyce. He was a magistrate, and deputy-lieutenant of Fife, of which county he was also for some years vice-lieutenant. He held the Honorary Colonelcy of the Fifeshire Artillery Militia. He married, in 1840, Lady Georgiana Isabella Campbell, daughter of the first Earl of Cawdor, by whom he has left a numerous family, one of his daughters being the widow of the late and mother of the present Marquis of Downshire.
John married Lady Georgiana Isabella Campbell, daughter of John Frederick Campbell, 1st Earl Cawdor and Elizabeth Thynne, in 1840. (Lady Georgiana Isabella Campbell was born on 1 May 1820.)
