William Thomas Mercer was a British Colonial Secretary, Chief
Secretary for Administration in Hong Kong from 1854 to 1868. He ruled
Hong Kong for nearly three years, between July 1862 to 11 February
1864, and March 1865 to March 1866. Mercer was the nephew of John
Francis Davis, the second Governor of Hong Kong (1844 - 1848) and went
out with him to be his private secretary. Mercer Street in Sheung Wan
is named after him. Colonial Treasurer, Hong Kong (1851).
