Richard married Annie Somerville Livingstone Learmonth, daughter of Doctor John Livingstone Learmonth and Anne Alicia Hare MacWhirter, on 22 November 1879. (Annie Somerville Livingstone Learmonth was born on 10 June 1849 in Lawrence Park, Victoria, Australia and died on 18 January 1895.)
