Educated at New College, Oxford. Admitted to Lincoln's Inn on 4 February 1725 and was called to the bar on 14 November 1732. He adopted the name of Atkyns, probably because of his grandfather's legal eminence, some time after 1732, though by 1767 he had reverted to his original name.
