General Notes: Naval officer and colonial officer. Midshipman on Minden in 1816. Lieutenant on Hussar in 1822. In April 1826 he was promoted commander of the hospital ship at Port Royal, and was advanced to post rank on 28 August 1828. From then he virtually retired from the navy, being actively and almost continuously employed by the Foreign or Colonial office. He was chargé d'affaires in Texas from 1842 to 1846, and governor of Bermuda (1846-54), Trinidad (1854-6), and St Helena (1863-9). He had honorary promotions to rear-admiral (2 May 1855), vice admiral (15 January 1862) and admiral on 12 September 1865. Noted events in his life were: 1. He served in the military in March 1815 in Royal Navy. 2. Promotion: 11 June 1822, Lieutenant. Charles married Clara Windsor. |
