Viscount Powerscourt, who died yesterday at his home in County Wicklow at the age of 66, was chairman of the hospitals' committee which organized the Irish sweepstake. A Liberal Unionist and a Protestant, he had been his Majesty's Lieutenant for County Wicklow, and in 1921 was elected a Senator of Southern Ireland. The Right Hon. Sir Mervyn Richard Wingfield, K.P., M.V.O., Viscount Powerscourt, of Powerscourt, County Wicklow, and Baron Wingfield, of Wingfield, County Wexford, in the Peerage of Ireland. Baron Powerscourt, of Powerscourt, County Wicklow, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, was born on July 16, 1880, the elder son of the seventh Viscount and Lady Julia Coke, eldest daughter of Thomas William, second Earl of Leicester. The eighth Viscount, who succeeded to the title on the death of his father in 1904, served in the Irish Guards. From 1906 to 1907 he was Comptroller of the Household to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Lord Aberdeen, and in 1910 became his Majesty's Lieutenant for County Wicklow, and was also a Justice of the Peace for County Dublin. Lord Powerscourt married in 1903, when he was still Mervyn Wingfield, Sybil, the second daughter of the late Major Walter Pleydell-Bouverie, of Market Lavington, Wiltshire, grandson of the third Earl of Radnor. Lady Powerscourt died last December. There were two sons and a daughter of the marriage, but the second son died in 1925. The new Viscount is the Hon. Mervyn Patrick Wingfield, who was born on August 22, 1905.
