General Notes:
He joined the British Forces in New York in October 1776 at the start of the revolutionary war. His family followed him and in early 1777 they moved to Lloyd's Neck, Long Island, New York to join other loyalist families. On 5 June 1778 the Stratford estate was confiscated by the rebels and the family lost their land and possessions. King George III granted, to all loyalists who did not want to return home, two hundred acres of land and provisions for two years in New Brunswick, then a part of Nova Scotia. Following the peace of 1783 the family sailed for New Brunswick. They landed at Parr Town on the east side of St. John during the early summer of 1783. They took up residence in Maugerville, above Parr Town on the St. John River.
Joseph married Isabella Elizabeth Alleyne, daughter of Abel Alleyne and Mary Woodbridge, on 27 October 1760 in Braintree, Massachusetts. (Isabella Elizabeth Alleyne was born on 4 October 1743 in Milton, Massachusetts,1116 died on 8 December 1813 in Maugerville, New Brunswick and was buried in 1813 in Christ Church Cemetery, Maugerville, New Brunswick.)
