He was educated at Charterhouse whcih he left at the age of sixteen to join the Royal Navy. Two years later he went ot South Africa where for four years he worked for forestry company in Zululand, before renting a dairy and fruit farm near Johannesburg. When war broke out he returned to Scotland and served with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and S.O.E.

Ronald married Sheila Dundas Lawrie in 1939.

Ronald next married Elizabeth Jane Waterhouse.
