General Notes:
Educated at Malvern and Oriel College, Oxford. Changed his name from James Elliot Balfour in 1893. When war broke out he received a commission as Second Lieutenant 3rd Bn. attd. 2nd Bn., Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) and distinguished himself at Loos by leading his men to the furthest point reached by the regiment in 1915. He fell at Loos in the fifth line of the German trenches.
