General Notes: Planter and politician. On his father's death Alleyne inherited the Barbadian plantations of Four Hills, Bawdens, and Skeets, and on his mother's death a 'place in Gloucestershire called Langley and all the rest of and residue of her estate.' He retained a life interest in his wife's plantation of St. Nicholas, where he may have been responsible for the great house, later called St. Nicholas Abbey. He was many years member, and afterwards president, of the assembly of St. Andrew's, in Barbados, which office he filled for 30 years. 175 Noted events in his life were: 1. Created Baronet:in 8 April 1769. by King George III. 2. He signed a will on 13 October 1798. 438 Codicil 9 May 1802 3. He had an estate probated on 25 May 1802. 438 John married Christian Dottin, daughter of Joseph Dottin and Anne Jordan, on 19 October 1746 in St. James Church, Barbados 434.,435 (Christian Dottin died in 1782 434.) John next married Jane Abel Alleyne, daughter of Dr. Abel Alleyne and Jane Skeet, on 29 June 1786 in St. James, Barbados.436 (Jane Abel Alleyne was born c 1765 in Barbados 435, christened on 2 October 1765 in St. James, Barbados,439,440 died in August 1800 435 and was buried on 29 August 1800 in St. James, Barbados 435.) |
