Admitted to the Middle Temple in 1708 and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 20 October 1711, he succeeded to the Baronetcy when his elder brother died. On 22 April 1737 the surname was established to be Bouverie by Act of Parliament and in the same year became a trustee of the Georgia Society [Trustees for establishing the colony of Georgia in America]. He was a Tory MP for Salisbury 1741 - 1747 and Recorder of Salisbury in 1744. On 29 June 1747 he created Lord Longford, Baron of Longford and Viscount Folkestone. He married 2ndly on 21 April 1741 to Elizabeth (died 25 September 1782), eldest daughter of 1st Baron Romney. (2nd marriage date also found as
21/4/1746 as per vital records index). According to Horace Walpolo, Sir Jacob Bouverie was a considerable Jacobite who had bought his title for 12,000 pounds Sterling from the Duchess of Kendal, the King's mistress. He was a great picture collector and patron of arts and did much to adorn Longford.

Jacob married Mary Clarke, daughter of Bartholomew Clarke and Mary Young, on 31 January 1724 in St. Paul's Cathederal, London. (Mary Clarke was born c 1701 and died on 16 November 1739.)

Jacob next married Elizabeth Marsham, daughter of Robert Marsham and Elizabeth Shovel, on 21 April 1741 in Swancombe, Kent. (Elizabeth Marsham died in 1782.)
