A merchant in London trading with Turkey, he acquired a great fortune.
In 1707 he was appointed Governor of the Bank of England. In 1713 he
was knighted and on 19 February 1714 created a Baronet. Married
twice, he was father of at least thirteen children. Of St. Dunstans in the East in London.

William married Anne Urry, daughter of David Urry and Unknown, on 29 April 1686 in St. Catherine Cree Church, London. (Anne Urry was born in 1666 and died on 5 June 1739.)
